McGill Student Government Representative Says "Punch a Zionist Today"

Feb 9, 2017
When a student government representative at McGill University says it's time to "punch a Zionist," pro-Israel students leap into action

Hasbara Fellowships Canada, the country's largest pro-Israel campus advocacy, strongly condemned a recent social media post by a member of the Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU). The post, published on Feb 6 and written by Igor Sadikov, one of McGill’s Arts Representatives to SSMU, wrote "punch a Zionist today," a play on the recent "Punch a Nazi" social media phenomenon.

Alexandra Levine, a pro-Israel student leader and Hasbara Fellow at McGill University, said: "It is unacceptable for a member of SSMU's Legislative Council and Board of Directors to incite violence against an entire group, especially during a time where there exists major gaps in Zionist reception on McGill's campus. Statements like this alienate those who are part of that group, and in general go against the equity values that McGill claims to promote. The SSMU President and the President of the Arts Undergraduate Society of McGill, to which Igor Sadikov is a representative to, are aware of the issue and further action will be taken."

Robert Walker, National Director of Hasbara Fellowships Canada, said: "We are working closely with our student leaders to ensure that proper corrective action is taken and that this kind of hateful post has no place on a Canadian campus, least of all from a student government representative."
