Tips for activists during finals and the holiday break

Dec 6, 2010

With finals approaching, activism is beginning to wind down at most campuses.  Though the action appears to be over, pro-Israel student groups are getting ready for next semester.  During quiet times such as finals, the groups who prepare best for the future will be the most successful.  Here are some tips for pro-Israel activists to use during finals and the holiday break:

  • Think long term! Take this time in which you are not pre-occupied with the immediate future to think about where you want your organization to be at the end of next semester.  Set goals and make a plan to achieve those goals.

  • Bonding. Plan a retreat to bond with the leaders of your campus pro-Israel activist group.  Use the opportunities to discuss the last semester and plan ahead for next semester.

  • Empower your newer members. Though finals season is not the best time to recruit, it is a good time to assign new positions to people in your organization.  If you need a new treasurer or media relations person, for example, ask one of your active members now! Allow that person to contemplate the position and plan out a strategy over the holiday break.

  • Train yourself/ your activists. It is not too late to apply for the Hasbara Fellowships winter activism training seminar in Israel!  Furthermore, Israel Inside/Out—the online course about Israel—is a great resource that one can take advantage of on his/her very own computer over the holiday break.

  • Create a recruiting plan for next semester. The very beginning of the term is the best time to recruit.  Set a date for recruiting events now, plan them over the break, and you’ll be ready to PROMOTE PROMOTE PROMOTE the day you return to school.

  • Touch base with coalition partners. Wish those campus allies “happy studying,” send them an update about your activities this last semester, and tell them about a few things you are planning for next semester.
