University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba Celebrate Israeli Culture

Feb 4, 2011

By Ashley Faintuch

This week was Israel Week at the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba! Despite temperatures hitting -46°C, Israeli culture brought warmth to campus. Fellow, Jesse Marantz, organized a week full of events for both universities.

Tables were set up in main areas of campus, and had a different theme everyday. Overall, events were received well by students, faculty and staff, and a positive impact was made. Hasbara Fellowships campaign, Flags For Humanity was showcased, and brought a lot of curious students to the table. Many students saw flags of countries they are from or visited and were drawn in to get more information and learn about the other countries Israel has helped. Every time I walked by the table, there were a minimum of two people asking for more information or stating they had no idea Israel helped other countries thanking student volunteers for enlightening them!

As we all know, Israeli culture is more than just helping countries in time of need, and is rich in food. A selection of Israeli cuisine was available for students to sample! An entire buffet of Israeli salad, couscous, Bisli and falafel balls were available, and of course the Israeli dietary staple of pita and hummous. For those of us that have been to Israel, we all know how important coffee is to Israelis, and Hillel Winnipeg made sure to include that. Students could help themselves to FREE Aroma coffee and the signature Aroma chocolates! Students were also on hand to give explanations about these foods.

If food and humanitarian aid is not enough, Israeli culture was also showcased through music, visual cultural displays, and a virtual kotel - a live feed of the Kotel projected on a big screen with information about history. Lauren Slusky, Vice President of Hillel at U of Manitoba said that "the entire week was awesome! It was a lot of fun and Flags for Humanity was extremely engaging and sparked a lot of questions, comments and interest. People loved the food and music and we were asked multiple times for our playlist."
