This week was a week full of planning for Western Canada. Fellows across the region are putting together exciting events in the coming weeks. With Valentine's day next Monday, University of Alberta Fellow Marit Abrams is planning a fundraiser on campus on Monday and Tuesday for Save a Child's Heart (SACH). her fundraiser is titled "Make a Heart to Save a Heart" and for a donation you can make Valentines cards. U of A students can find the table in the Student Union Building and anyone can visit the Hillel Edmonton sponsorship page she created and donate.
SACH is an Israeli nonprofit organization that raises money to improve the quality of pediatric care for children from developing countries who suffer from heart disease. SACH believes every child deserves the best medical treatment available, regardless of the child's nationality, religion, colour, gender or financial situation. SACH takes a 2-pronged approach: 1. training doctors in these developing countries so they can help children in their home country; and 2. bringing children to Israel to receive the life-saving cardiac surgery. At a cost of ~$10,000/child saved, fundraising is a necessity for such a great humanitarian cause. SACH's
Valentines Day campaign is titled "We Heart Your Hearts" and the goal is to raise $30,000 to bring Muaz (age 3 - Ethiopia), Seba (8 months - Gaza), and Yaa (age 1- Ghana) to Israel for a second chance at life.
At the
University of Victoria, Israel on Campus (IOC) and the JSA teamed up with the Indian Students Association for a
Bollywood themed Shabbat dinner this Friday! In addition to such a great coalition, this Shabbat Dinner is being held in honour of Avi Shaefer z'l. Avi was a 21 year old freshman at Brown University who was killed by a drunk driver a year ago. Avi was very involved in Israel Advocacy on his campus, and served in the IDF for three years prior to university.
All schools in the region are also planning Israel Week's in the near future. They will be celebrating Israeli culture, holding fundraisers, raising awareness and tributing Gilad Shalit, a kidnapped soldier in Hamas captivity for over 4 years.
