Considering it is the last week before reading week and students are over their heads in midterms and assignments, the region has seen a lot of pro-Israel activity.
Starting west with British Columbia, University of Victoria's Israel on Campus and Hillel teamed up with the Indian Students Association for an exciting Bollywood themed Shabbat dinner. It was a great partnership and all 50+ attendees had fun and enjoyed the Indian cuisine. The student groups are already in talks of planning their next joint Shabbat as well as future programs! In addition to the coalition, they will be welcoming an Israel Diversity team on campus March 1. The team is a group of Israeli's consisting of: an Ethiopian immigrant, a Russian immigrant, and Israeli Arab and a gay Israel to come speak about life in Israel and show the diversity among Israeli society. They are also in the works of planning an Israel week.
The Muslim Students Association at
Simon Fraser University, is sponsoring an event equating Gaza to a concentration camp. This equation is wrong and Jewish students see it as a malicious attack on their families, heritage and history. A
petition has been created to stop the trivialization of the Holocaust, and urge students to educate themselves about the Holocaust, what is actually happening in Gaza, and Hamas's oppression of Gaza's people and its genocidal objectives toward Israel and the Jewish people. The petition also calls for the members of the SFU MSA to engage in fair, factual and responsible discourse. Please take a look at the
petition and feel free to sign it.
Edmonton Hillel at the University of Alberta, held a fundraiser "Make a Heart to Save a Heart" for Save a Child's Heart. This initiative was headed by Hasbara Fellow Marit Abrams, and students could learn about the organization and humanitarian work they do while making a card for their valentine and friends for a donation.
