Western Canada Update

It's reading week in Western Canada, but that hasn't stopped students from Israel advocacy.
In Winnipeg, students attended an advocacy training session on Sunday led by me. They were given an overview of Israel, as well as messaging and how to communicate for Israel. Additionally, Hasbara Fellow
Robin Super, brought everyone up to date on current events in Israel and the issues in surrounding countries. Attendees left with increased knowledge on Israel, as students had varying levels of prior knowledge from no knowledge at all, to minimal knowledge of what is going on to a good understanding of the situation.
Thursday night in Winnipeg, the local Jewish Business Network chapter is hosting an event on social responsibility in business and Jewish values in tikkun olam. After the speakers of a rabbi and local business professor, the group held a casino night, where members and guests bought in for $10, half the money went to the overall winner, and the other half went to Israeli humanitarian organization Save a Child's Heart.
At the University of British Columbia, students in the UBC Israel Awareness Club are preparing for Israel A Party Week next week. The week will be celebrating Israel and is being kicked off with a Tel-Aviv style house party by AEPi! Other events that week include krav maga, yoga, a movie night, fundraiser for Hand-in-Hand and an Israeli Diversity Panel. The diversity panel is also visiting the University of Victoria, and consists of an Ethiopian immigrant, Russian immigrant, gay Israel and Arab Israeli. Despite all these positives in the BC area, Simon Fraser University saw a panel discussion Wednesday night equating Gaza with a concentration camp. There were 4 people on the panel, but students of SFU Hillel were able to have some dialogue following the event and 1-on-1 conversations.
