Southeast Update

Mar 7, 2011

From Gail Axelrod

Kudos to all of the south’s amazing Israel advocates!

Shalom FIU, under the leadership of Hasbara Fellow Rebecca Sterling at Florida International University, had an extremely successful start to Israel Peace Week. Week one of the two-week event featured Truman National Security Project Fellow Mara Karlin, who spoke on US Foreign Policy in the Middle East and the challenges posed by Hezbollah.  Shalom FIU also screened Eytan Fox’s film “The Bubble,” in partnership with GLBT Advocacy Coalition and College Democrats. The film truly highlights the vast freedoms enjoyed by Israelis. Other highlights of the week included Hasbara Fellowships’ campaign Think Green. Think Blue. and a lecture by former US Representative Ron Klein.

Week two of Israel Peace Week kicks off on Monday, March 7 at FIU with “Culture Shock! The Best of Israel” in GC room 314 at 12:30 PM.  Other highlights throughout the week include a ZOA lecture on Gaza and a screening of the documentary Iranium on Wednesday, March 9 at 8 PM in GC 287 B. Shalom FIU wraps up Israel Peace Week with Hasbara Fellowships’ campaigns Flags for Humanity and Save a Child's Heart.

On March 2, Gators for Israel at The University of Florida, under the leadership of Hasbara Fellow Claire Miller, co-sponsored a lecture by Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz in conjunction with Hillel, ACCENT Speakers Bureau, and Jewish Awareness Month.  Dershowtiz addressed 60 campus leaders and 40 up and coming Israel advocates.

On March 7, Dawgs for Israel under the leadership of Meredith Broudy and Daniel Matatiaho at the University of Georgia presents "Israel at Heart" at 7:00 PM in the Zell B. Miller Learning Center Room 214. The session features the non-profit Israel at Heart, which seeks to promote a better understanding of Israel and her people. The organization brings the real faces and stories of Israeli university students to communities around the world.

Stay tuned for news on Israel Peace Week at Emory University. The event kicks off on March 14 and features a screening of Iranium on Wednesday, March 16 and an Israeli themed Shabbat dinner co-sponsored by Chabad at Emory.

Shalom y’all,

Gail
