It's Israel Peace Week at the University of Winnipeg!

Mar 18, 2011

By Ashley Faintuch

This week is Israel Peace Week in Winnipeg, and a phenomenal campaign has been planned and implemented! The week long campaign at the University of Winnipeg focuses on democracy and human rights in Israel. Student volunteers are standing strong for Israel because they support democracy, human rights and freedom and have a passion to educate the campus community.

The week was executed by student group Campus Democracy, and has alternating campaigns. The week started off with the theme: democracy. A display board depicting diversity, freedom and rights in Israel was what attracted students, staff and faculty to the table, additionally, there was various supporting material. The Hasbara Fellowships campaign Support Human Rights, Support Israel was the base of this campaign, and the cards were a huge hit on campus. Overall response was great, and we reached out to hundreds of people on the first day. The location of the table could not be better. The table is situated on the 2nd floor between the escalators in the main campus building. With the way the university is set up, the majority of students must pass by to get to class as it is centrally located. Of those walking by, we were able to engage a lot of people and continue discussion.

A Philosophy professor was one of the first visitors of the day, and she came with a student. The student kept asking her questions, and although she was responding quietly, the parts I heard were misinformed. When the time was right, I spoke up and gave some facts. The student had to run, but the professor read every single information piece we had and then began an inquiring discussion with us. By the time she left, she thanked us for teaching her about Israel and the democracy and freedom minorities in Israel have. She was especially impressed by the Bahai Temple in Haifa! Since her visit, she has sent her students to stop by our table.

On Tuesday and Thursday, the theme was Israel has no partner for peace: Hamas, an obstacle to peace. This campaign was the hardest advocacy Winnipeg has ever seen and attracted a lot of attention. While many students showed support and solidarity with Hamas and Hamas terror, since they are a democratically elected government, other students - especially Israeli students - were thankful we were getting the strong message out there.

Friday, the message will shift back to democracy, freedom and peace, and I am confident we will build up more support for Israel. Myself along with the volunteers are proud to associate ourselves and defend a country so passionate about human rights. The volunteers for the week are: Hasbara Fellow Robin Super, Tyrone Krawetz, Igor Golinkin, Adeolu Adetola, Stephanie Faintuch, Seth Morris, Barry Tabacznik and Noa Farage.

For more information, the Winnipeg Jewish Review is also reporting on the progress of Israel Peace Week.

In addition to Israel Peace Week, the University of Winnipeg President, Lloyd Axworthy (Former Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs), has taken steps to try and promote dialogue on campus. The original article was written by the Winnipeg Jewish Review, and a version of it was reprinted in the Jerusalem Post.
