Staying on TOP: Tabling, Op-Eds, and Petitions

Sep 26, 2011

By: Daniel Cohen

Last week saw a record number of campuses using the new “Friend Request Pending” promotional materials to stand up for Israel.  The Midwest region had several stand-out efforts, thanks to the work of Hasbara Fellows and select Binyan students who really took the extra step and got more involved on campus.

Indiana University

Binyan students made a huge impact at IU last week.  Eshley Spitzer wrote a fantastic op-ed in the Indiana Daily Student calling for cooperation with Middle East peace talks.  Sean Fuchs also led a successful tabling campaign with over three tables at a time, and signed up dozens of students for the Real Partners Real Peace petition online.  Eshley offered some tips for future tablers: "It's SO important to focus on the positive things about Israel, and really try to reach out to people who are really just ignorant about the situation and give them reasons to suport Israel... candy is always helpful in getting people's attention," Spitzer said. Students at IU passed out Bazooka Joe bubble gum as a clever engagement tool.

University of Wisconsin-Madison

Binyan student Natanya Russek (pictured) helped out with tabling and writing an op-ed, and MadPac was well represented in Mad-town.  Things are just getting started in Madison with a big Madpac meeting around the corner, the first guest speaker Ishmael Khaldi next month, and even an exciting iPhone Israel app that will have news, event info, and other useful bulletins that will hopefully be exported to other campuses!

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Hasbara Fellows Tali Segev and Shoshanna Shaoul led Israel Illini tabling efforts, as Binyan student Betsy Drazner got involved in submitting an op-ed to the Illini Independent.  By handing out free pens clipped onto "Friend Request Pending" fliers, Israel Illini was able to give out almost all of their materials and reach a much wider audience - everyone loves free pens!

University of Michigan

Hasbara Fellow Ally Berman got the tabling campaign mobilized at Michigan, getting among the most signatures for the RPRP petition out of any campus.  An op-ed is coming soon, and Michigan was able to get a jump on September by uniting most of the Israel groups under the tabling initiative.

University of Pittsburgh

Binyan Fellows Becca Tanen and Alina Bengert were among several who helped out with tabling.  Students at Pitt used an awesome table stand to promote an attractive display with the Friend Request Pending posters.

Yasher koach to everyone who stepped up, and keep up the great work!  To all the op-ed writers: Remember to submit your op-ed to our Ultimate Challenge, and to all the viral video sharers, remember the contest to win a FREE IPad2 ends this Friday – there’s still time to post the video on your Facebook profile and get those likes!  Email screenshots to Netanella at nrefael@hasbarafellowships.org to enter.  All who get at least 100 likes will win a FREE iTunes gift card!
