Last week, student delegates from several Bay Area schools spent their Shabbats near Santa Cruz, CA to freshen up on their advocacy skills. Students attended sessions which focused on topics from campus organizing and coalition building to educational discussions spanning different historical wars. In their free time, students had an opportunity to network, relax, and discuss Israel advocacy!
Students who attended are taking their skills back to campus and hosting major events. Tikvah Students for Israel at UC Berkeley, led by co-presidents and Hasbara Fellows Jecob Lewis and Davis Sverdlov brought Jerusalem Post correspondent Yaakov Katz to campus this past week to discuss strategic implications of the Arab Spring, the results of the Gilad Shalit deal, and other topics regarding Israel and the Middle East.
The Santa Cruz Israel Action Committee at UC Santa Cruz hosted Tabby Davoodi, who shared her childhood stories of being raised in the Islamic Republic of Iran shortly after the Iranian revolution.
Students have already used the knowledge gained on the retreat to engage in discussion about Israel on their campuses. Ilana Grines, a student from UC Berkeley and a participant on retreat, engaged in a friendly debate with a peer regarding the Arab-Israel conflict and said that "he even said he may be changing his views because of me!"
