Empire State Update

Oct 27, 2010

By: Netanella Refael

It’s been a busy week here in New York!

Last Monday, Yakum- Yeshiva University’s Israel club started off their three-step Israel advocacy, training program by showing the movie Crossing The Line at Stern College for Women. On Sunday October 24, Yakum will be showing the film again at their YU campus with opening words from their Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Hershel Schachter. Yakum wants their students at Yeshiva University to reach out to other campuses in the NY area and to be more active with Israel Advocacy.

Binghamton students were very excited to have Elliot Mathias, Founder and Director of Hasbara Fellowships, come in for a successful Advocacy Training session. Tamar Skolnick, VP of Bearcats for Israel said, “Rabbi Mathias was amazing as expected.” Students at Binghamton are getting equally eager for Neil Lazarus’ advocacy training program on November 1, brought to them by BUZO with the help of fellow Teddy Stalbow, President of Binghamton University Zionist Organization.

BU Bearcats for Israel will be hosting Hillel’s weekly Shabbat Dinner on Friday November 12.   Bearcats for Israel is turning this into an Israel themed Shabbat, complete with Israeli food and other aspects of Israeli culture.  This Shabbat will demonstrate that Israel is a country rich in culture, rife with diversity, and even a top producer of innovations and technology.  It will also present Israel as a beacon of freedom and democracy, as well as a model for the rest of the world when it comes to human rights and humanitarian aid.

For now both Israel groups at Binghamton are preparing more events for the campus, such as the screening of The Case for Israel.

Aryeh Green’s tour ended last week on a great note in NYC where he spoke at both Brooklyn College and Columbia University "It was an excellent educational experience for all of us Israel lovers and activists, and certainly for the non-affiliated students who attended. There are also learning points that we've gained from the experience-- first and foremost being that more effective support, collaboration, and communication is critical amongst us Israel activists on campus." Zahava Mandelbaum president of the student group Campus Media Watch brought Green to Columbia.

On November 2, NYC students will have the great privilege of attending an exclusive screening of the film Crossing The Line with film maker and producer Rabbi Raphael Shore. The film will be screened at Reunion by the Birthright Israel Alumni Community. For more information Click Here.
