It's midterm mania in Central Canada, but there is still lots of programming in the region! Recently, Hillel Winnipeg screened Unsettled. Shira Meged, Israel Affairs Chair of Hillel at the University of Manitoba, shared her thoughts on the movie and the event:
"Unsettled is a riveting documentary about Israels withdrawal from Gaza in 2005. The story follows a group of young Israelis as they face, process, and experience the withdrawal from competing angles. This film does a commendable job of portraying the different experiences and thoughts of Israeli soldiers, workers, and civilians during this point in time and offers a deep and insightful snapshot of the emotional whereabouts of the people on both sides during this controversial moment in Israel’s recent history. Following the film, Hillel Winnipeg members took part in a stimulating discussion. After an emotional reaction to the film, many thoughts were voiced about Ariel Sharon’s decision to withdraw from Gaza, with competing viewpoints. Additionally, all of our members were appreciative of the double sided, unbiased presentation of the controversy. Unsettled is a must see film for those who wish to gain an in-depth and personal understanding of the Gaza withdrawal."
Last Tuesday, students in Winnipeg launched a Winnipeg chapter of the Jewish Business Network (JBN). The Keynote speaker at this inaugural event was Dr. Henri Rothschild, who holds a number of titles. He is involved with three strategic and complementary Science and Technology organizations in Canada’s system of innovation: Precarn; International Science and Technology Partnerships Canada (ISTP Canada), which he is President and CEO of; and manages the Canada-Israel Industrial R&D Foundation (CIIRDF), which he has managed since its inception in 1994.
Dr. Rothschild spoke on his work incubating Israeli High-Tech start up companies as well as Eureka. Eureka is the world's largest R&D initiative, which Israel, is the only member country not in the European Union. Israel joined Eureka in 2000 and assumed Chairmanship for the 2010/2011 year. Through Eureka, Israel has been extremely successful, with Israelis participating in nearly 15% of funded projects. Israel's success with Eureka has not ended there, European member countries are interested in Israel's ideas, and view Israel as a successful model of high tech R&D.
