Northern California Update

Nov 11, 2010

By: Jessica Felber

SCIAC's Israeli-style Shabbat in Santa Cruz last Friday night was incredible!  With upwards of 160 students in attendance, this Shabbat drew over 100 people more than usual!  SCIAC used this forum to increase positive associations with Israel as well as to increase interest in getting involved with pro-Israel activity on campus.  Two students spoke about what Israel means to them as American Jews, and one girl spoke about the similarities between her parents' Israeli and Chinese cultures.  And to the enjoyment of everyone SCIAC hosted an Israel trivia game as well!  For those of you who attended this event and would like to know more about SCIAC and getting involved, email jfelber@hasbarafellowships.org!

Yesterday Tikvah also created positive associations with Israel in students.  Tikvah hosted a "Taste of Israel" in the center of Berkeley's campus.  They had falafel cooked right on campus and handed it out for free along with Hasbara's "Did You Know Cards."  In addition, they played Israeli music for the full hour on the stereo system and handed out freebies like candy and pins.  Students came from everywhere to get a taste of Israeli culture and walked away thinking that Israel is great and that their food is delicious!
Neither of these events included or required intensive Israel education of advocacy.  It is important to remember that there are many ways to advocate for the country we love, including simply sharing its culture with other people.  Sometimes food and a few facts is enough for people to leave liking Israel and wanting to learn more!
